Even This Crowd

What is "this crowd"? Did the creator of this advertisement want people to look more closely at the crowd around them, or were they just creating a hopefully cleaver advertisement for their car company? These are the questions that popped into my head as I looked at this advertisement at a show hosted by 89.3 The Current at First Ave. This advertisement up among others for the Vitamin and 89.3 The Current is the one that made me begin to question the culture around me. The advertisement begs the observer to define "this crowd," so that is what I started to do. The place was filled with people of all kinds, but the word that came to mind was hipsters. The crowd consisted of various types of hipsters. There were the hippie hipsters, the ones smelling of patchouli and dreaded hair, there were the trendy hipsters, ones with glasses and clothes from Urban Outfitters and American Apparel, and then there were the ones that simply shopped at thrift stores and their grandparents closets. Also strange to me is that I so simply judged this crowd and split them up into these very similar, yet definite categories. Not only were there many different subcategories of hipsters that this group could be put into, there was a large range of ages from 18 to upper 50's. When looking at "this crowd" in this way, I could understand why it would be slightly difficult to appeal to all of these different types of people. This advertisement made me open my eyes to the culture around me. Whether this was intentional on behalf of the car company I am not entirely certain, but it opened my eyes.

  1. The picture of the poster does not seem to be working so I will describe it here.

It was an advertisement for White Bear Subaru and it had the image of a car and along the top it said, "Crowd Pleaser, Even This Crowd."
