Superior? Or Simply Not.

The image from above is clear and precise. Make no mistake; there is not much to interpret from what is shown. Men, oddly enough, have been somewhat ‘superior’ to women throughout history. Although times have caused this theory to fluctuate, society has always and probably will continue to see men as slightly more ‘exclusive,’ if you will, then women are.
According to Richard Dyre, the embodiment of whiteness is something that is in but not of the body. The white body is seemingly more ‘powerful’ then the black body; however, what about a white female body vs. white male body? There were three claims that Dyre focused on. The third one dealt with enterprising, and drawing the conclusion that white bodies are more hardworking then black bodies. Again, who is more hardworking, a white female or a white male: society suggests a white male. Now, according to the image above and the history of our society, what makes white male more superior? Does it have to do with essentialism, the body of genetics (Dyre’s second claim)? The physical make up of a white male visually and strength wise makes him more ‘preferred’ or ‘premium’ to say a white female or a black male. Who decides all this? Or did it just evolve from religion and Christianity (Dyre’s first claim)?
The image allows us to interpret a very political and cultural view of today’s world: some races as well as genders within that race are more ‘acceptable’ than others. The fact that such an image even exists to tell a woman that she is slightly less superior to a male is demeaning to this genders culture, and once culture is impacted, so are politics. It is quite similar to the domino effect.

  1. I often ask myself the same question: Who decided that women are inferior to men, that Whites are superior to Blacks, etc... Where does all that come from? I wonder if these world views will ever be changed.

  2. This is a great post. Think about what this scale would have looked like 30 years ago? What would happen if a black male and white male were put on the scale? Would the black male be superior to the white female? It really makes one think about how we got the class, race, and gender separation ideas we have today.
