You better purchase fresh coffee or else!

1952: Is your coffee pressure packed for extra freshness? If hubby can tell you're not making Chase & <span class=This image clearly depicts a patriarchal husband, who has his pretty, dolled up wife over his knee with his hand in the air about to spank his wife for not purchasing Chase & Sanborn Coffee. The ad seems like it comes from the 1950's and 1960's where the 'perfect family' was being shown on TV on shows such as Father Know's Best and Leave it to Beaver. During those times, there was a huge creation of uniformed housing where many people were finally able to buy a house, but by many people i mean Caucasians. They all shown the white 'classic family' where the wives are perfect housewives who are dressed to the nines wearing their pearls and heels with their perfectly made hair, and yet have time to cook, clean, and care for the children without breaking a sweat. Chase & Sanborn Coffee are obviously following the lines of the classic 'white family' and trying to make a 'joke' with their slogan on the advertisement pretty much saying if your husband finds out you aren't doing your job and buying him the freshest coffee, he will discipline you by spanking you.

After looking at this advertisement, many could look at it in disgust since Chase & Sanborn Coffee are clearly taking the position that women are submissive to their husbands and are there to serve their husbands. Many could also look at this and laugh at how ridiculous the image is because in nowadays culture, this would be unacceptable and would anger lots of feminists with the political stance the company is taking on the roles of women in the family.

We all can relate to the image of a child being disciplined by being placed over the knee of the father and being spanked. By looking at this image, this makes our bodies cringe and yet laugh because the wife is flailing in the air with a ridiculous look on her face. Her face doesn't seem scared but jokingly scared as in 'oops i didn't buy the right coffee...'. I think for most people the advertisement would be funny just because of the ridiculousness of it all and how they depict women but I'm sure this also makes people angry and offend them.
