The Snooki Poof.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkepMJdIx84

The Snooki Poof, the hair style that change our culture. From the MTV show Jersey Shore Snooki’s fame has changed what once was a 90’s hair style, using a jumbo clip and tease the crap out of the top of your head, back in style. This video, which I know is ridiculous, is a girl who obviously is a fan of the popular show has taken the time to explain to others how to create the “perfect poof” with this in mind it show that we all strive towards “looking” like something better. Society has made Snooki’s poof famous and is shown in many ways, many people rock the poof, Ellen DeGeneres was Snooki’s poof for Halloween, Snooki has even written a book “A Shore Thing” which on its cover only features her poof.

Due to the large fan base the show has become very popular. Girls often mimic Snooki and tease their hair as high as possible, but know firsthand you can never get your poof high enough. Seriously, women and girls battle this with everything. This is a perfect example of our “pop” culture has created a way for the population to strive to achieve the unattainable. As we discussed in class with the example of SHAPE magazine by analyzing how the women of on the cover look and what their common characteristics were. Our society has designed pretty much everything around the greed of wanting to look better. In Bordo’s reading which women have an “ever changing, elusive ideal of femininity – pursuit without terminus,” she explain women can never be satisfied we are always wanting more, sometimes in an unhealthy way. Is this wanting more human nature our has our society formed this way due to human nature? The normal women daily body practices compared to men is marginal to say the least, like we said in class women must always “modify” themselves. Bordo also agrees women must take a certain amount of time during the day to “diet, make up, and dress. Snooki’s body practice of poofing her hair, shows she is just another person with her own body practices, but hers are just more obviously shown.

  1. I found the topic that you chose interesting because it is a hairstyle/body practice that already existed before Jersey Shore, but Snooki took it to the extreme and became the face of the style. I liked how you seemed to be making fun of how "you can never get your poof high enough" because I feel like poofs just keep looking sillier and sillier the higher they get.

  2. There are a lot of good readings started here. I am an avid watcher of Jersey Shore simply for the fact that I find their practices so absurd. The way these people live their lives seems so ridiculous to me, but it is what makes them happy. What I find even more ridiculous than the poof that Snookie does, is how much skin tanner these women from the show use. This changing of the skin tone is an even bigger practice that is seen in many other cultures other than this small one. Very interesting things to look at.

  3. Every time I read about Snooki's poof, I can't get Lady Gaga's "Hair" out of my head; because there would be no Snooki without the poof. I don't know, I'm weird. This reminds of Jen's post too, why has body practices with hair taken such an odd turn?
