With all the information in commercials and movies that is constantly bombarded us, half the time we don't fully realize and comprehend what is being said or showed. There is so many gender stereotypes in movies and commercials that go unquestioned because its disguised in the realm of a movie or ad that it must mean that it's ok as long as you don't do it in real life. What's worse is that we are taught these stereotypes very early in age, which is showed in the first clip of the little boy explaining the difference between a boy and girl. In the above link, the video is combination of movies and commercials that displays the common stereotypes of males and females. In the commercial with Kelly Ripa it shows her during a 'typical day' after she finishes her talk show, she rushes home to be a housewife and is helped by the addition of Electrolux appliances like a refrigerator and dishwasher, implying that the women belongs in the kitchen and taking care of the home above all else. This video also displays how women are things that can be objectified, and taken advantage of and how they need to be directed because they aren't smart enough to figure it out themselves.
For the males, there are several clips explaining how the 'typical' man should be. That they should be the leaders, confident, commanding, hairy, dirty, objectify all women. They always need to be the drivers (of trucks nonetheless) because they have to be in control and show their power at all times. Also, that that their 'MANness' should never be threatened or undermined because that is all that represents them above all else. If in any case that it should be, this immediately makes them a baby or they have some sort of disease or their status of life is immediately equal to that of a little girl with pigtails.
All this and much more has been integrated into society that pretty much goes unnoticed or not thought of unless someone is literally screaming about it and shoving it under your nose going “Look at this, for goodness sake!!” I wonder why that is?..
