How many ways can you interpret sign? Which way is the correct interpretation?
I found this image ironic and funny as it is a prime example of using semantics. So we have the church here, creating an eye catching phrase as the signifier, and the signified reader interpreting the meaning behind the ironic and almost arrogant toned wording.
I feel like the sign's rhetoric directing me to laugh at the obvious statement but to force a different meaning than just irony. The word god automatically turns on the religious debate button in my mind. So this must be in front of a church, where else would it be. God is considered the creator of all things, and often in history people have asked for signs to prove he existed. These signs were usually presented in miraculous feats, bring back the dead or split seas in half, but often it was just the cry at the end of a hard work day pleading for help in a difficult decision. How ever this message seems to take that idea that instead of a show of power from a higher being, it was literally the creation of a sign. I feel that the phrase is backing up the ideology that if he created everything, this is a by product of his will as well.
This in no means compels some one to believe that god exists, so I find myself asking if that is really the argument that this phrase is making. I think it is bold and arrogant statement. When I read the words, it is almost scoffing at paganism and skepticism. Coming out like you wanted substantial evidence well here it is, like a cocky irritating child. As if it were going, "I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you."
I also found this sign ironic and funny. I really liked what was said regarding the sign and how it is more than just a sign.
ReplyDeleteI also think it is a bold and arrogant statement as well. I feel like The picture pokes fun of those who are waiting for something (from a higher power) in order to make them feel more comforted and concrete in their beliefs. I feel like the picture tells those people to stop waiting around and just believe (in whatever they may believe whether that is god, or no god etc.)
I feel like this would be in front of a church as well since I often see churches put silly signs up that catch your attention. It may be a ploy to get people into the church, which takes the position on culture that religion is important to people.
Over all well said Cougar!
